Chapter Twelve

“Cisco, you take my car, we’ll drop it off at my place,” I said, sliding into the front seat of the Jeep.

“What do you mean, drop it off?” Miguel asked.

“We’re burning daylight here. Elizabet mentioned May. I want to see if she’s okay before I duck and cover for the night.”

Cisco whistled, long and surprised. “You just killed a human servant and you want to head back out?”

“You need rest,” Miguel said.

“When the sun sets, I’m on the chopping block. Rest will come, but the sun won’t stay up forever,” I answered. “I’m not sitting back and watching my options melt away with the day. You can either come with me or go home and wait for me to get back from May’s. Your choice.”

We buckled in and hit the road. Miguel gripped his steering wheel until it groaned under the force. I tried to lighten the mood by reminding him it was a rental, but the joke fell to the floor. He weaved in and out of traffic, Cisco hot on our tail, as if he willed the people to get out of his way. With the tension rising in the cab of the Jeep, I, too, wanted to get the hell out of his way.

“I’m sorry,” I finally said. “I know you want me to go home and lock the door, waiting this out until it’s over, but I can’t.”

“You can. The issue is that you won’t,” he corrected me. “Twice now, Julian has sent people for you. You killed his human servant, Lish. The next time he comes for you, he’s coming for your death, not your help. You could have agreed and bought yourself some time. Instead, you hung a noose around your neck and the necks of everyone near you.”

“You’re right, I can, but I won’t,” I answered. “And no, I couldn’t have just said yes, and this problem would have magically disappeared. She would have taken me right then and there. I could feel it. She offered me three days, but she wasn’t leaving without me.”

“We were there. We could have stopped her,” he countered.

“And she’d still be dead, along with innocents she would have shot. Did you forget she had a gun?”

“You didn’t know that until she pulled it out. You decided to tell her off before things even got heated.”

I paused, staring at him. I nodded once and turned in my seat, facing forward. “I didn’t want to kill her, Miguel.”

He reached over the middle console and squeezed my hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for it to come out that way.”

“Yes, you did. Just because I’m not one of your people doesn’t mean I can’t tell when things are going to turn out badly for me. I may not be Lycan, but I can feel intention. I can feel evil,” I answered. “The moment she walked into my office, I felt her aura. If I didn’t leave with her, she was going to kill me. I tried to buy as much time as I could until you called, and I didn’t answer.
